[카달로그] 중국 바이오기업, 생물보안법에도 미국 기업과 잇따라 계약

중국 바이오의약품 위탁개발생산(CDMO) 기업 우시바이오로직스가 올해 미국 바이오 기업과 잇따라 계약을 체결했다. 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 중국 바이오 기업 견제를 목적으로 지난해 '생물보안법'에 서명했지만, 중국 기업들의 미국 시장 영향력은 약화되지 않고 있다. 삼성바이오로직스 등 국내 주요 기업이 생물보안법으로 반사 이익을 볼 것이란 전망에도 물음표가 붙는 상황이다.

28일 외신에 따르면, 우시바이오는 26일 미국 비리디안 테라퓨틱스와 5년 계약을 맺었다. 비리디안의 갑상선 안병증 치료제 '벨리그로투그' 생산을 맡기로 한 것이다. 올해 2월에는 미국 버텍스 파마슈티컬스에 자가면역질환 신약 후보물질 개발 및 상업화 권리를 이전하는 계약을 체결하기도 했다.

CDMO 계약에서 고객사와의 파트너십은 통상 기밀 사항으로 잘 공개하지 않는다. 업계에서는 우시바이오가 이를 굳이 공개한 것이 '우리는 건재하다'는 시그널을 보낸 것 아니냐는 해석에 무게가 실린다. 미국 바이오 전문매체 엔드포인트뉴스는 "생물보안법에 대한 미국 바이오 기업들의 우려가 완화되고 있음을 시사한다"고 분석했다.

생물보안법은 중국 바이오 기업과 미 행정기관의 계약·보조금 거래를 금지하는 내용을 골자로 한다. 트럼프 대통령이 지난해 12월 서명한 국방수권법(NDAA)에 포함됐다. 우시바이오는 생물보안법이 처음 발의됐을 때 제재 대상에 이름을 올렸다. 최종 통과된 법안에서는 특정 기업명이 삭제됐지만, 별도 절차를 통해 우려 바이오 기업으로 지정될 가능성은 여전히 열려 있다.
